The Venice Carnival 2026, taking place from 31 January to 17 February, brings one of the city’s most iconic celebrations to life with elaborate masks, water parades and centuries-old traditions of the Serenissima.

This year’s theme, “Atlas of Wonders”, transforms Venice into a journey through art, imagination and global inspirations, while Caffè Florian the cultural heart of Piazza San Marco since 1720 welcomes visitors with performances, curated events and an atmosphere reminiscent of Venetian splendour.

The Venice Carnival 2026 as a cultural and sensory experience

The Venetian Carnival is not just a celebration, it is a full sensory experience. The precious fabrics of the masks, the sound of footsteps along the calli, the reflections of water that enhance the magic… every detail tells a story!

Walking through St Mark’s Square and the most iconic areas of the city feels like stepping into a suspended dimension, where past and present meet. This is what makes the Venice Carnival so unique: its ability to move and inspire, year after year, without ever losing its identity.

The soul of the Carnival shaped by memory, masks and theatre

The Venice Carnival has very ancient roots. It was born as a time of freedom, when social rules were temporarily suspended. For centuries, behind a mask, nobles and commoners could mingle without distinction, experiencing the city in a new and surprising way.

A fascinating curiosity? In the past, Carnival did not last only a few days; it could extend for several months, turning Venice into a continuous stage.

Venetian masks, the most powerful symbol of Carnival, are far more than simple decorations. They are objects full of meaning.

The Bauta, with its white face and black cloak, symbolised anonymity and freedom of speech.

The Moretta, mysterious and silent, was worn by women and expressed elegance and charm without words.

The Colombina, lighter and richly decorated, represents the festive and theatrical side of Carnival.

Each mask tells a story, a fragment of history that still lives on among calli and campielli.

This deep connection between memory, theatre and identity is what makes the Venetian Carnival such a unique experience, still able to enchant those who live it with curiosity and an open spirit.

Official theme, dates and main events

From January 31 to February 17, 2026, Venice celebrates Carnival with a packed calendar of events.

The theme “Olympus – The Origins of the Game” which guides shows, artistic installations, and performances that transform the city, celebrates the Olympic year and harks back to mythology and the harmony of body and mind, but also to the Venice of centuries past, where Carnival was a grand stage for competitions, acrobatic displays and tests of collective skill, anticipating the spirit of the modern Olympics.

The celebrations begin on Saturday 31 January with the Venice Carnival Street Show, a lively series of performances taking place in Venice’s squares, in the centre of Mestre, on the islands of the Lagoon and across the city’s municipalities.

On Sunday 1 February, the traditional water parade takes place along the Grand Canal. A procession of traditional boats, organised with the Coordinamento Associazioni Remiere di Voga alla Veneta, is led by the iconic papier-mâché Pantegana.
On Monday, February 16th, there will be the unmissable election of the Maria.

During the Carnival season, there will also be a rich program of shows and events, which can be discovered on the official Venice Carnival website.

It is an edition that invites visitors to get lost and be surprised, following a narrative thread that connects past and future. As a regular Carnival visitor once said:

“In Venice, during Carnival, you don’t feel like a spectator. You feel part of the scene.”

Carnival 2026 at Caffè Florian as a tribute to Venetian tradition

During Carnival, Caffè Florian becomes a privileged place from which to observe the celebration. Sitting at its tables means watching a constant flow of masks, costumes and characters that seem to step out of the Carnival magnets collection inspired by Massimo Di Capua’s photographs, while St Mark’s Square turns into a grand open-air theatre.

Some say Carnival should be experienced on the streets, and perhaps that is true. Yet stopping at Florian allows you to observe it from a different perspective — slower and more refined — where taste and atmosphere blend with the timeless elegance of one of Venice’s most iconic places.

Artisanal masks and Venetian craftsmanship in dialogue between art and identity

Carnival is also a celebration of Venetian craftsmanship. Masks embody ancient knowledge that continues to be passed down and evolve over time. They are not just decorative objects, but memories to treasure, symbols of identity and small fragments of Venice to take home.

Among the Carnival-inspired creations, belonging to Florian’s artistic souvenirs, there are the Carnival magnets, reinterpret Venetian imagery with a refined and contemporary style. They are perfect as small gifts or travel keepsakes.

Perhaps this is the true charm of the Venetian Carnival: discovering its secrets and many facets and letting yourself be immersed in the festive atmosphere that embraces the entire city.
