From 6 November to 4 December 2025, Caffè Florian in Venice hosts “Una borsa per il Caffè Florian”, a design exhibition created in collaboration with the Venice Academy of Fine Arts.

The event showcases the projects of Design students, who have reinterpreted the historical and artistic identity of Caffè Florian through conceptual handbags and contemporary art objects inspired by Venetian tradition.

The exhibition celebrates the dialogue between art, craftsmanship and education, reaffirming Caffè Florian’s role as a cultural landmark where heritage meets modern creativity, and where the vision of emerging designers finds harmony with the timeless elegance of Venice.

Caffè Florian a meeting point between art, design and history

Florian has always been more than a café. It is a cultural salon, a refuge, and a vibrant meeting place for artists, intellectuals, travellers and lovers of beauty.

Its long history — dating back to 1720 — is a continuous journey of collaborations and artistic exchanges. Over the years, Florian has welcomed exhibitions, installations and special projects created by students, designers and established artists.

Some focus on objects inspired by the café itself, while others reinterpret the historic Rooms of Caffè Florian in Piazza San Marco through contemporary creative languages.

These projects turn the café into a true laboratory of ideas, where tradition meets contemporary art and design.

Hosting an exhibition like the one on display this November is therefore not an exception but a natural extension of Florian’s cultural spirit.

A constant bridge between past and future, where the Coffeehouse becomes both stage and inspiration for new creative perspectives.

The collaboration with the Venice Academy of Fine Arts

The collaboration with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia was conceived as a hands-on design experience: a real opportunity for students to work with an iconic institution and translate its identity into contemporary objects.

Guided by their professors, students developed prototypes and concepts for “Una borsa per il Caffè Florian”, transforming decorative motifs, room colours and even the Caffè’s 18th-century atmosphere into functional or purely artistic pieces.

The project grew within the Academy’s educational activities dedicated to design and is part of its longstanding commitment to connecting students with cultural institutions and local organisations.

The result is a diverse collection of bags and objects — each reflecting unique styles, visions and creative approaches — held together by a common thread: retelling the Florian story through a fresh, youthful and contemporary language.

When an object becomes a story of identity

What is a bag? Far more than an accessory, it is a container of meanings.
Within this exhibition, the bag becomes a symbol of Caffè Florian, a way to enclose aesthetics, functionality and storytelling in a single object.

Students embraced the idea of “carrying a piece of the Florian with them”, reimagining iconic elements – room decorations, stained-glass colours, 18th-century patterns – into new shapes, sometimes surprising, sometimes conceptual, always expressive.

Venice as a source of inspiration

There could be no stronger muse than Venice itself.
With its golden reflections and striking contrasts, the city has always been the natural backdrop of Caffè Florian—a place where time feels suspended and art seems to inhabit every stone.
The exhibition includes projects that not only pay homage to the Coffeehouse in St. Mark’s Square but also evoke the essence of Venice: its materials, its precious rhythms, its unmistakable visual identity.

A Venice to wear, to reinterpret, to transform.

Events and educational encounters

Throughout the exhibition period, Caffè Florian will host a series of encounters between visitors, students and Academy faculty.

These events will offer the chance to learn about the creative process behind each project, explore the ideas that shaped thebag designs and discover how tradition and innovation can coexist in a harmonious dialogue.

Caffè Florian as a guardian of culture and contemporary creation

With the project “Una Borsa per il Caffè Florian”, the café renews its mission: safeguarding its artistic and historical heritage while giving space to the voices of the present.

The exhibition invites visitors to look at Florian through new eyes, guided by the sensitivity of young designers who reinterpret its essence and imagine the future of a timeless symbol.
