Dates and schedule of the Festa del Redentore 2024

The most emblematic feast of the summer is also historically known as “La notte famosissima”.

The most heartfelt by Venetians, the moment most shared by “visitors”.

The Feast of the Redeemer embodies Venetian tradition and culture; in fact, it is celebrated every year with great fervor. This festival, with deep historical roots, is a moment of reflection and joy that combines the religion with the history and folklore.

In 2024, the Feast of the Redeemer will be celebrated on July 20 and 21, maintaining the tradition of celebrating it on the third Sunday of July and the preceding Saturday.

On Saturday evening, July 20, Venice will light up with a magnificent fireworks display in St. Mark’s Basin, a spectacular event that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The festival continues through Sunday with religious services at the Church of the Redeemer and gondola and pupparini regatta along the Giudecca Canal.

Traditions and customs of the Festa del Redentore

The symbols of this feast make us aware of how different aspects of the history of Venice and of the daily life of Venetians come together in this celebration:

The most important is the Votivo Bridge for pilgrims: a temporary bridge built on floating structures that allow us to span the distance of the Giudecca Canal and land at the Church of the Holy Redeemer.

One of the most iconic images of the festival is the pontoon bridge set up on the Giudecca Canal. This temporary bridge allows the pilgrims to walk to the Church of the Redeemer on the island of Giudecca.

Since the 16th century, crossing this temporary bridge has represented a pilgrimage as a sign of gratitude, resilience and the sense of community that allowed for rebirth after the plague.

Over the years, the bridge has undergone several transformations, but it has always maintained its most important function: to be a symbol of liberation and hope.

Today, the bridge is built of modular wood and steel structures and is erected each year before the festival, which is inaugurated on the Friday evening before the day of the Redeemer. It continues to be a central element of the festivities, reminding Venetians and visitors of the historical and emotional value of this tradition.

Dining outdoors

During the festival, long tables are traditionally set outdoors on the banks of the Giudecca or on festively decorated boats. Paper lanterns, colorful balloons and garlands adorn the boats that gather in St. Mark’s Basin on Saturday to watch the fireworks. “Ombre de vin” (glasses of wine) accompanies venetian delicacies.

Mouth watering just thinking about it….

“Bovoletti” (small snails cooked and seasoned with parsley, garlic and pepper), “bigoi in salsa” (homemade pasta seasoned with a sauce of anchovies and onions) and “Sardee in Saor” (fried sardines and onions sautéed with a little white vinegar, raisins and pine nuts): venetian culinary tradition will be the star of the table.

The tables are set, the menus full of succulent dishes are prepared, the guest lists are drawn up, the seating arrangements are made, and the bottles of all kind of drinks, water and…especially Prosecco!

The famous fireworks show during the event

The adrenaline rush of the fireworks, which thanks to Marco Polo are also part of our tradition, is already in the air.

It charges this celebration with the same expectations as a New Year’s Eve, because it is rebirth that we are talking about when we talk about the Feast of the Redeemer.

Since 1577, the sense of redemption has been renewed in a festive and liberating rite that combines folklore and religious faith.

It is impossible to resist this “Famous Night” that is a true immersive experience.

The fires light up the sky, but also the water: a play of lights and reflections creates a kaleidoscope of colors over St. Mark’s Basin.

The Feast of the Redeemer capture the essence of Venice: sacred, profane, joyful, festive, but always grateful and respectful of religious rites.

In July 1577, the bridge made it possible for the first time to reach the island of Giudecca, where the foundations of the Church of the Redeemer, designed by Andrea Palladio, were being laid.

Today, as then, it is possible to walk on a floating bridge that spans the entire width of the Giudecca Canal for a distance of about 330 meters.

Only once a year the crossing becomes a mystical moment that fits well with the festive character of the city.

Let yourself be captured by the magic, but don’t forget to plan your visit by reserving your berth or place on the water.

Pupparini Regatta on the Giudecca Canal for Redentore

Traditional regattas and competitions

Sunday, July 21 is the time of religious and civil institutions, it is the time of sacredness with the solemn masses in the Redentore Church, but it is also the time of sport with the regattas in the Giudecca Canal: colorful “pupparini” and two-oared gondolas will race supported by tireless cheering from the Zattere and Giudecca shores.
